PENETRON Secures a Cellar – Mountain Vistas Included

Georgia

The new Porta Caucasia Hotel in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), Georgia, opened its doors last month; the elegant luxury hotel offers breath-taking views – and is built to last. PENETRON ADMIX was mixed into the concrete for the hotel’s basement structure to ensure a long life and a dry wine cellar.

The new Porta Caucasia Hotel is located immediately south of the stunning Kazbegi National Park. It offers impressive views of the majestic Mt. Kazbek peak and many of the glaciers that spill out of the steep valleys surrounding the dormant volcano. With an elegant, natural stone exterior, this boutique hotel features 33 rooms, individually finished in natural woods sourced from the region. Amenities include a spa, sauna, restaurant, and an exclusive wine store, where the Khareba Wine Company offers the best Georgian vintages.

“The Porta Caucasia Hotel is located in one of the most picturesque areas of our country,” says Dzhimsher Shengelia, Director of Penetron Georgia. “The mountains have great skiing and hiking – and the views of the peaks are unforgettable!”

CLIENT ENDORSES PENETRON

The rocky topography and close proximity of the Terek River made it important to find a durable waterproofing solution for the hotel’s below-grade basement structures. The Khareba Wine Company, who owns and manages the hotel wine store and stores its valuable inventory in the hotel cellar, is also a long-time Penetron customer.

“We had great success applying PENETRON crystalline products when Khareba renovated and expanded their own wine cellars,” explains Dzhimsher Shengelia. “They quickly recommended our crystalline technology to make sure the hotel foundation would remain secure and dry.”

MAKING CONCRETE IMPERMEABLE

PENETRON ADMIX was selected to treat all the concrete used to build the hotel’s basement structures. Easily mixed in during batching and unaffected by climatic conditions, PENETRON ADMIX becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix. It reduces permeability by permanently sealing microcracks, pores and capillaries, effectively protecting the concrete against water penetration and the effects of deterioration, even under high hydrostatic pressure. PENETRON ADMIX provides a self-healing capability and performs consistently during the life of the concrete.

“The construction turned out really well,” adds Dzhimsher Shengelia. “We celebrated the opening of the hotel – and the new Khareba wine store - with a bottle of their finest Saperavi red wine!”
