Vietnam’s largest mall, the Aeon Mall Hà Đông just outside downtown Hanoi, Vietnam, opened its doors in a festive November 2019 ceremony. Behind the pomp and glitter, Penetron crystalline technology ensured a waterproof and durable concrete structure for the mall’s wastewater treatment plant.
“The knock-on effect of the new Aeon Mall has spurred further development across the Hà Đông region,” explains Jozef Van Beeck, Director of International Sales & Marketing for The Penetron Group. “This increased construction activity comprises many residential development projects, including high-rise apartments and new public transportation networks, as well as the first “bus rapid transportation” system in Vietnam, which connects downtown Hanoi, the country’s capital, with Hà Đông district, located in the western part of the city.
The Aeon Mall Hà Đông is the fifth mall project completed by Aeon Mall, a Japanese developer, and the second shopping center in the Hanoi region. The Aeon Mall Long Biên, located just east of Hanoi, opened in 2018. Set in an area of nearly 10 hectares, the new mall in Hà Đông offers a wide variety of around 220 stores, services and family entertainment on three floors, including the AEON supermarket. Further, the complex has parking for 2,100 cars – and over 9,000 motorcycles.
“It’s one of the largest shopping centers in Vietnam,” adds Kim Khanh Ngo Xuan, CEO & Managing Director of Penetron Vietnam. “The Hà Đông construction site of more than 98,000 m2 comprises a total mall floor space of ca. 150,000 m2. Equally important is the mall’s integrated wastewater treatment plant, which our team was involved in.”
Penetron Vietnam has accrued extensive experience in the construction of water storage and wastewater treatment plants. Working with both project contractors – Kajima and Hoa Binh – Kim’s team proposed an application of PENETRON, a surface-applied crystalline waterproofing material, to all concrete structures exposed to water and sewage effluent.
Applied to concrete by brush or spray, PENETRON penetrates deeply into the concrete matrix in the presence of moisture. The resulting chemical reaction fills microcracks, pores and capillaries with an insoluble crystalline formation, making the concrete impermeable. PENETRON-treated concrete prevents water, sulfates and the aggressive chemicals commonly found in sewage treatment plants from entering the concrete, even under the hydrostatic pressure encountered in a typical wastewater treatment plant. Tico Vietnam successfully applied PENETRON to all the plant’s concrete elements, ensuring a waterproof and protected wastewater treatment plant.
“At the Hà Đông plant, any cracks that develop during the lifetime of the concrete are quickly self-healed by PENETRON,” adds Kim Khanh Ngo Xuan. “This virtually eliminates any future maintenance. That’s permanent concrete protection.”
